I know, I know. The word “feminist” seems to really evoke some strong reactions in people, in all genders.
I’ve had these strong reactions directed towards me my whole life.
Which is why I wanted to write this post about what a feminist really is because I think there’s a lot of assumptions and wrong information out there floating around.
So, who are we?
We are all people. Not just women, but also other genders, who believe that women are deserving of the same treatment as other genders.
We are professionals. We are academics. We are students, moms & dads, daughters & sons, wives/husbands, girlfriends/boyfriends, partners, employed, homemakers, teachers, house cleaners, bartenders, etc.
This basically means we are EVERYWHERE. We are in every pocket of our society, in our communities, in our stores, in our families.
We believe that women are just as important as men.
We believe that women’s health issues are just as important and worthy of the same research and attention as men’s health issues receive.
We believe that women doing the bulk of the child rearing and house care, is unacceptable.
We believe in the same job opportunities for all of us.
Why are these things so important?
Because raising the pay gap to match men in all industries is paramount to raising the economic situation of women and children.
Because we are mostly responsible for taking care of our children and suffering when they are sick which negatively impacts our employment history, our earning potential, and our retirement savings.
Because giving us the same opportunities for jobs, for healthcare, and for childcare will impact our world more positively, and the ripple effect from this just makes life better for all of us.
Because having more women represented in our political systems means that our issues are also taken into account and not just overlooked and rejected.
When women win, we ALL win.
When women are empowered, we ALL are empowered.
When women take care of themselves and have the money and support to do so, all of our lives improve, and our children fare better.
This means that our society’s grow stronger, are healthier and more resilient.
This is a win-win for ALL.
So no, feminists are not radical “man haters” … most of us love men and build lives with them.
We are just tired of having to beg and fight for every right and opportunity that men have always been afforded.
We know that the future is female and that when women and girls succeed, our world is a much better planet for it: let’s work together to make sure all genders and races are equally represented and honored!
Stand with us.
