Whew. I don’t know about you, but I am sooooo ready to take a break these next 2 weeks.
I plan on doing ZERO work (unless I have to), lots of sleeping in, reading, eating Christmas cookies, drinking lots of coffee from my Nespresso (can I tell you how much I love this machine??) and lounging around in my pjs as much as I can. Heaven.
I think all of us deserve a break, no matter how little it is. Even if you can’t take time off right now, you can still take a TIME OUT.
This could be a quick walk in a park with your furry bestie, a Facetime with your grand-baby or your mom, even just giving yourself permission to not cook for an evening and let everyone fend for themselves can be a great respite.
Whatever it is that you’re doing or have been doing, to get through 2020, I applaud you!
This leads me into the perfect word to describe what is necessary right now. With ourselves and with the humans around us: GRACE.
What do I mean by that? Here are some examples of how you can apply this word:
The post office is so slammed right now that packages are taking weeks to arrive. Post office employees are working overtime, 7 days a week as the mail has quadrupled this year to numbers they’ve never seen before. Are you upset that your order hasn’t arrived yet? Deep breath. They’re doing the best they can. It will arrive as soon as it can. Grace.
You can’t get through to a real person at Verizon/DirecTv/Comcast? They’re getting record numbers of calls right now with all the issues people are having with technology (we’re all on our devices more than ever.) Take a deep breath. They’re doing the best they can with the manpower they have. Grace.
The line at the grocery store is crazy long right now. It appears everyone is shopping at the same time. Take a deep breath. The cashiers are working as quickly and efficiently as they can to get your order taken care of. You’ll get their attention soon. Grace.
Grace is a loving act of understanding that those around you are doing their best, even if it’s not moving the needle fast enough.
Grace is a way to honor each other’s humanness and our inevitable ability to fuck up. On the regular.
Grace is what we bestow upon ourselves when we are struggling to get the basics done. When our resources are so tapped out right now from all the shit going on, you forgive yourself for not checking all the items off your list every day. It’s about giving yourself a break. Remember that you too are doing the best you can with what you have. Grace.
No matter what you see in front of you, remember that every person around us is struggling right now. Struggling HARD.
Giving grace to other humans will feel like a gift because it is. I know I am so thankful when a client is gracious with me when I forget to send them their homework or my returning their email takes a bit longer than normal. I try to return the favor to others whenever I can, remember that we’re all in the weeds right now.
Do this for others as it’s the best thing we can do for one another right now. Grace. Love. Respect. Kindness.
We’re all doing the best we can, every minute of every day. I know I am so thankful for those around me who make my world run more smoothly and if they need extra space right now to fuck up? I’m giving it to them.
Grace. Try it! Let me know how it feels for you in the comments below.
