Parenting an anxious child is one of the hardest emotional balancing acts there is. You want to protect your child from distress. That instinct is completely natural and loving. But sometimes, the very things we do to help can accidentally reinforce anxiety instead of relieving it.
Enabling anxiety means repeatedly removing discomfort before your child has a chance to cope with it. It feels kind in the moment. Over time, though, it teaches children that anxiety is something to escape rather than manage.
This doesn’t make you a bad parent. It makes you human. Understanding the difference between support and enabling is the first step toward helping your child build real resilience.
