Have you heard of the 80/20 rule?
Imagine you’re at a crossroad of sorts. You have a decision in front of you that you need to make. Could be something big, or something smaller, but it is still important to you. Decisions tend to paralyze.
You’re feeling paralyzed by the options — all the pros and cons (yes, you made that list!) so now you’re just stuck.
We’ve got a tip that can help you move the needle somewhat and hopefully get you to where you would like to be.
I call it the 80/20 rule.
This means don’t make a decision for the 20% but for the 80%.
What’s that mean? I’ll explain.
Let’s say you have to make a decision to move. Your lease is up, but you’re unsure of where you want to be.
One neighborhood has a water view, but the other neighborhood has green space, great restaurants, and is close to work.
Do you make a decision for something that you’ll do for 20% of the time? In this example, this would be the water. Yes, it’s awesome to have that water view and to take a walk along the riverside for sure, but be honest with yourself: how much will you actually do that? A few times a month? Maybe?
That my love, is the 20% I’m talking about. So I would encourage you to not move somewhere based on something you’ll only do or appreciate for about 20% of your time. Instead look at what you’ll be doing 80% of the time: enjoying good restaurants, a closer commute to the office, and the ability to park where you love to walk your doggos.
This rule can be applied to anything really, get creative! Need to figure out what job to take? What has the most benefits to your life now? Aim for the 80%!
Need to decide if you’re leaving or staying in a relationship? Use the same principle and see if that helps you get closer to a decision that feels good. Again, use the 80/20 rule and aim for 80%.
And as always, we’re here for you especially if you’re feeling paralyzed or stuck. You can schedule an appointment with any of our qualified therapists easily here.
