It’s time to get out of your comfort zone before your dreams die.
There. said it. Eff your comfort zone.
It ain’t looking out for you babe! At least not in a way that will help you progress.
Rather, your comfort zone is the place where your brain wants you to live and never, ever leave. Remember your brain is designed to protect you from anything that could feel yucky or cause you any kind of pain.
But unfortunately, your brain can’t tell if a “threat” is a real one, or just an imaginary one. Meaning, it will sound an alarm that feels the same to you no matter the cause. This means an intruder coming into your house is as scary to your brain as you giving a speech at a local event.
Crazy right?? But so true!
This is why we experience so much physical anxiety over events that we know logically will never hurt us. But our bodies cannot differentiate between these so a lot of the time, we use this fear as a sign to stop. Stop doing what we were doing. Stop trying this new skill cuz we still suck at it. Stop having goals. Stop having dreams. On and on and on.
I always tell clients that your comfort zone is where your dreams go to die.
Why do I say this?
Because feeling comfortable can also cause us to stay stagnant. It can lull us into an almost trance-like state where we keep doing the things we do, on auto-pilot and next thing you know, another year has gone by! I know you know what I’m saying!
Of course, this is a good feeling sometimes, right? I’m not saying you need to feel uncomfortable all the damn time, but some discomfort is good for us because it pushes us to keep striving for our goals and dreams.
Let’s try a little get out of your comfort zone exercise.
Take a minute right now to think of a dream you have or a goal you want to accomplish. It can be any size or manner of importance, just pick one.
Now, analyze if you are not taking steps to work on these because you’re comfortable where you are?
You know what I’m talking about. Maybe you’re making a decent living, but you know you could be earning more. Or you are okay with another year going by that you haven’t gone to Mexico yet, even though it’s been on your bucket list since you were 12?
If so, you are comfortable girl! What if you pushed yourself a little and went for that certification for your job which would boost your salary $5,000 a year? Or what if you actually started researching flights and hotels in Mexico? What would actually happen then?
Let’s say you start taking these baby steps towards your dreams/goals: you may begin to feel a little boost of adrenaline, some excitement flutters in your belly, you are actually thinking that you could do this, or you could go there, etc. YES!!
Our comfort zone is a great place to visit when we need a break or some time to reflect on our next steps, but don’t STAY there.
Use your comfort zone to help fill you back up and replenish your low reserves, but don’t live there.
Keep shooting for the stars, reaching for your goals, dreaming your big dreams because that is where all the magic is.
