We are beginning our 2nd cycle of our support groups for middle school and high school aged girl groups this week and we’re terribly excited!
We’ve been hearing however, that there are some parents who are unsure whether this will be helpful for their child, so I thought I would speak to some of your questions.
First, I hear some curiosity about what exactly this group is about?
Well, to put it plainly: we know our girls are struggling! We work with many teen girls and get to witness weekly how much they are worrying, feeling isolated, having anxiety, not feeling motivated, etc.
So, during the 6 weeks of our groups, we are addressing these issues and figuring out what each girl is working through: we devise a plan that is specific to them which can help them handle their negative emotions and their stress. We utilize fun ways to do this with painting, drawing, designing vision boards and journaling. We gift each girl their own journal, a stress ball and at the end, they are able to bring home rocks they’ve painted to remind themselves of their greatest strengths. We are also having a young adult girl who has worked through anxiety and came out to the other side, visit one of the groups each cycle to share her story. Best of all, we incorporate fun into our serious discussions!
Second, why is a group good for your daughter?
We also know firsthand how powerful a peer group of other people who are also struggling, can be.
Most behavioral programs always recommend membership in a group when a teen is recovering from a mental health crisis. And we also know how frustrating it is that there are never any groups for your child to join when they need it. Now we can say we have one in the community to offer you and we are committed to running them every 8 weeks throughout the year.
Having your daughter meet other girls her age, hear their stories and also realize she’s not alone, can be a game changer!
Third, what are the details?
We are currently offering 2 groups: 1 for middle school aged girls (GirlBoss) and our high school aged girl group (GirlPower). The Girlboss group is every Tuesday from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm and our GirlPower group is every Thursday from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
These are closed groups which means they have a start date and an end date and they are $45 each session.
You are committed to attending 6 sessions (weeks) in a row which is for the entire course. We strongly recommend that you commit to having your child attend each one as each week a different topic is explored.
The groups are led by Shannon who is great with teenagers, has 2 daughters of her own and has experienced anxiety not only in herself, but also her children. Who better to help your daughter than someone who has been there and done that?
Lastly, we do require you to sign up for the groups and fill out our paperwork electronically.
Signing up is easy!
You can email our admin Lori at hello@empoweredconnections.net or you may call her at 301-690-0779 ext. 700, and she can quickly get you set up.
We believe in the power of connection in order for teen girls to heal and we believe wholeheartedly that being in a group is a huge part of that so don’t delay! Let’s help her get back to where she needs to be in order to live her best life.
Please let us know if you have any questions and/or concerns and we look forward to helping your daughter get back to her good place!
