Y’all know I’m a proud farmer’s daughter and while my upbringing was not always great (you know my story), there is one nugget that my dad used to say to me growing up:
There’s a time for harvest and a time for rest.
Now, he was talking about the cyclical nature of farming and growing crops of course, BUT it occurred to me last week that this saying could be applied to life right now. Only instead of harvest and rest, it’s hustle and rest.
Last week for whatever reason, was a dumpster fire! I was so busy with back-to-back meetings, issues, developing processes, and just biz development work, I literally was at my desk until late in the evening some days. This is not like me as I’m pretty good at finishing at 4pm and putting work aside so I can focus on my family and myself — healthy work/life boundaries and all.
However, my dad’s words came to me mid-week and I thought okay, this week was for harvest which means I am working my ass off trying to support my team members and continue making our practice the best it can be.
BUT, it won’t always be this way, I reassured myself.
Knowing this little diddy helped me face each day with my shoulders back and my eyes on the prize which was the weekend and our 5-day vacation coming around the corner.
So where can you apply there’s a time for harvest and a time for rest in your life?
Do you feel that your life goes in cycles too?
That some days/weeks/months you’re too busy to even do much else than just the basic shit?
And then other times, you have more room to think, journal, ponder and relax?
I believe these cycles between harvest and rest are natural and healthy for us. What’s not healthy, is when we are always in harvest mode, or we are always in rest mode.
A balance between the two is ideal which is why it’s so important to make sure you take advantage of the slower times and fill up your cup when you can.
This way when your life is a shit show, you are ready and prepared to dig in and get shiz done.
So think like a farmer babe, and work hard when it’s needed and play hard whenever you can.
Doing both – hustle and rest – will ensure that you are honoring both sides of who you are and will help you achieve your goals and also take good care of yourself. Win win!
