Happy New Year 2024 y’all! I hope you had a restful and regenerating holiday season!
You guys know how much I love me some Marie Forleo! Her book “Everything is Figureoutable” is a best seller and amazing!! I recommend it to clients and friends on the regular! You can buy it here.
Anyhoo, I have been receiving her emails for years (subscribe to her now at www.marieforleo.com you won’t regret it!) and I always love her content. She sent one out today that really struck me so I’m going to recap it for you here. If you’d like to watch it, click here.
Marie says there are 5 questions you can ask yourself this New Year’s, especially if you’re looking for a reset. Here they are:
Where am I craving something better in my business or my life?
Ok really dig in here. Take a few minutes to sit still and think about that. Are you craving more connection? More time to walk, read, play? More fun? Where are you feeling discouraged, unsatisfied, restless, you get the idea. Maybe you are feeling bored and stagnant at work, could this mean you would like more projects or an opportunity to advance? What about your primary relationship? Are you feeling disconnected? These areas could be the answers to this question.
What truth am I pretending not to know?
Oof. This one is tough. I think we don’t give ourselves enough credit but we as women are intuitive beings and oftentimes, we already “know” an answer to something before we’ve decided something (finally), but we just don’t want to face it.
So, are you avoiding looking at the relationship with your adult child? Or the work that you used to love now makes you want to cry heading into the office? Or are you avoiding looking at the mirror or you’re holding on to those size 8 clothes that you wore in high school? What about your finances? This is a big one but maybe it’s also something you’re ignoring. Unopened bills, we see you!
What rules have I been told I “have to” follow but they don’t feel right to me?
This could be any number of things here. It could be as complex as how you were raised to behave as a girl/woman, how you’re “supposed” to look or appear in society or as simple as a rule about an assumption on how your work is supposed to function. Do a deep dive into any place where you feel uncomfortable or where you have some resistance to doing something: this is where valuable information lives that you can use to answer this question.
If I don’t change my daily habits, will my life be better or worse 3 years from now?
Good question here, I love this one.
What do I need to let go of?
Another great question! According to Marie, it could be something physical like cleaning out closets and donating clothes you know you ain’t wearing anymore. Or it could be old projects you keep transferring from year to year (organizing photos, ugh!!); it could be limiting beliefs you have like “I’m never going to find someone to partner with, etc.; or even better, how about letting go of shitty habits? You know the one, drinking Pepsi first thing in the morning or not eating anything fresh in 2 weeks haha.
Maybe it’s an attitude you need to let go of, an emotional habit, or an expectation of yourself or another person. This one has been a huge game-changer for me truthfully. Once I let go of expecting certain behaviors from friends/family, I was able to release the hurt around the letdown every time and move on much more easily.
Ok, there you have it! Your blueprint for when you feel stuck, uninspired or you’re just ready to start positively recreating yourself. Tackling some of these questions will be a great way to create more space in your life for the things you WANT and could also be a “doorway” to let in the next best version of yo-self! And who doesn’t want that?
I’m looking forward to hearing from you if you find any inspiration from this article (thank you Marie Forleo) and as always, this is the shit we bang out in therapy so if you need extra support or help working on yourself, we’ve got you!
